Leonard Set for Return as Clippers Gear Up for Training Camp
Los Angeles Clippers head coach Ty Lue has assured fans and the basketball community that star forward Kawhi Leonard will be ready to hit the court when the team's training camp kicks off on October 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Leonard, who struggled with knee issues last season, missed the final eight regular-season games due to inflammation. His absence was significantly felt during crucial playoff matchups against the Dallas Mavericks. Despite these setbacks, Lue remains optimistic about Leonard's return. "I speak to him all the time. He'll be ready for [Clippers] training camp. He's feeling good and I know he'll be ready for training camp," Lue stated confidently.
Leonard's Road to Recovery
During the off-season, Leonard participated in a mini-camp with Team USA in Las Vegas ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. However, his hopes of representing his country were dashed when he was replaced by Boston Celtics guard Derrick White. This decision did not sit well with Clippers president Lawrence Frank, who was vocal about his disappointment. "It was USAB's call, and I was, quite frankly, very disappointed with the decision. Kawhi wanted to play. We wanted him to play. I was there the first two practices. He looked very good. Participated, was a full participant in everything that they did," Frank explained.
Frank continued to express his discontent, emphasizing Leonard's progress and readiness. "I expressed to them, I really wish that they would have given Kawhi more time. We have the benefit of having been around Kawhi for five years to see his body and see where he's at. So, he looked good to me," he added.
The Clippers' New Chapter
As the Clippers prepare for a new season, they face significant changes, including the departure of Paul George, who left the team for the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency. George's exit marks the end of an era for the Clippers, but it also opens up opportunities for others to step up. "When you lose a guy of Paul George's stature, instantly people [think] oh, they can't win or they're not going to be competitive. But that just challenges me even more. OK, people are counting us out or people don't think we're going to be good. That right there just gives me an extra dose of [motivation]," Lue remarked.
Looking ahead, the Clippers are set to make a significant splash with the inauguration of their new arena on October 23 against the Phoenix Suns. This milestone represents a fresh start for the team as they aim to bounce back from last season's disappointments and make a strong statement in the new NBA season.
As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Kawhi Leonard's performance and health. The Clippers' success this season will heavily depend on their star forward's ability to stay on the court and lead the team. With head coach Ty Lue's confidence and Leonard's determination, the Clippers are setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
