Los Angeles Lakers Prepare for the Season Under New Coach JJ Redick

In a bid to set the tone for the upcoming season, newly-appointed Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick gathered his team in Beverly Hills before the start of training camp. The gathering aimed to create a shared vision for a promising season ahead, and it was the first significant team event under Redick's leadership. As Max Christie put it, "It was kind of the first time that we all really got together as a team in one setting."

Setting Expectations

With a distinguished roster that made a run to the conference finals two seasons ago, the Lakers have retained a core group of seasoned players. The first practice session was a structured affair, featuring a comprehensive presentation led by Redick and his coaching staff. This session emphasized team values and established ground rules crucial for collective success. However, expectations are being managed carefully. In the words of LeBron James, "I don't have any expectations. And that's unfair to put any expectations on us right now. The only thing that we can count on each other is how we come to practice and come to work every day."

A Focused Roster

Redick's strategy involves maintaining a stable lineup spearheaded by veterans LeBron James and Anthony Davis, alongside Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, and Rui Hachimura. The intent is to utilize a nine-man rotation, a tactic hoped to balance experience with fresh energy. Notably, Max Christie, who has been re-signed to a four-year, $32 million contract, is expected to play a pivotal role. Redick expressed his confidence, stating, "Christie is a guy who's earned our coaching staff's trust over the last two months."

Striving for Consistency

Christie himself is aiming to make significant strides this season, acknowledging his sporadic performances in the past. "I think for me it's kind of just proving myself again. I haven't proven too much as a player in this league. I've had spurts and sporadic moments where I've been really good, but I want to put a whole season together. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to do that this year," Christie remarked with determination. James also underscored Christie’s potential impact, adding, "I think Max will be a big part of our rotation. He's gotten better and better and I'm happy we were able to bring him back in the summertime. I look forward to a bright season from him."

Challenges and Preparations

The Lakers do face some initial challenges. Jarred Vanderbilt is currently rehabilitating from offseason procedures on both feet, while Cam Reddish was held out of the 5-on-5 portion of practice due to soreness. These minor setbacks notwithstanding, the team is looking to build on its core strengths and foster a cohesive unit ready to contend at the highest levels.

As the Lakers move forward with their preparations, the emphasis on unity and shared purpose remains central. Redick's approach, grounded in clear communication and mutual trust, aims to maximize the potential of a talented roster. With the foundations laid during their early gatherings and practice sessions, the team's journey through the upcoming season holds promise and anticipation for their fans and followers.
