Patty Mills Joins Utah Jazz on One-Year Deal
Veteran point guard Patty Mills has secured a one-year deal with the Utah Jazz. The 36-year-old Australian, a seasoned NBA player, will earn $3.3 million in a fully guaranteed contract for the upcoming season, marking his 16th year in the league.
Mills entered the NBA as a second-round pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2009 draft. His career has since included stints with the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, and Miami Heat. He was a pivotal part of the Spurs' 2014 NBA championship team, providing both leadership and crucial three-point shooting.
Before his latest NBA move, Mills showcased his enduring talent on an international stage, participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Representing Australia, he averaged an impressive 16.5 points per game, a significant contribution that helped Australia reach the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, their journey was cut short by a loss to Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic.
For the Utah Jazz, the past season ended with a 31-51 record, prompting a series of strategic changes. Keyonte George is poised to take on the starting point guard duties, with Collin Sexton anticipated to start alongside him. Jordan Clarkson is expected to bring his spark off the bench as the team's sixth man. Additionally, the Jazz have bolstered their roster by signing Johnny Juzang and Svi Mykhailiuk, and extending Lauri Markkanen's contract.
Although Mills is not expected to secure a starting role, his presence will be invaluable for the Jazz. His experience and skills are anticipated to offer crucial guidance to the team's younger players. Mills is renowned for his ability to provide instant offense off the bench, and his versatility on the court will be a significant asset. The Jazz are banking on a harmonious blend of veterans like Mills and their emerging talents to steer them back into playoff contention.
As the upcoming NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on how these new pieces fit together. With Mills in their ranks, the Utah Jazz hope to leverage his wealth of experience and scoring ability to navigate the challenges ahead and make a solid push towards the playoffs once again.
